Hi i saw your "This Is Ai" post. And i just want to say, its so annoying.

I didnt even know who this person was, or seen their art before. when I first saw it, i tried to look for any mistakes. And it really made me upset that i couldn't find any. Eventually i saw the others and looked at one of the hands and saw the mistake.

But if it wasnt done by ai, i would say that is such a beautiful piece

but i cant compliment it, because i dont support it at all

I just wish people would try to actually learn the skills. Or like use it for an actual educational purpose. Like using it as a reference, so you have an idea. Or edit it, and use it as a reference or guide.

But people just steal the whole thing, which really is frustrating to real artists, and ut makes people not trust any artist. Because its getting "Better" at replicating other peoples art styles, and ways to form things.

I really look up to your art, but. I guess since the topic was brought up. I thought I could share.

Your art is seriously beautiful, and your very talented. I admire your art, and its gorgeous.

But sometimes it just is so infuriating to even think about.

The art on my blog isn't mine. It says so in the description and every post has credit with links to the artists' pages.

But yes, AI is getting better at replicating real artists' work because that's what it's designed to do. And even using it as a tool for inspiration or to edit the results isn't really ethical because AI is trained on copyrighted works that aren't used with permission.

The only ethical way it could be used is if it's either trained on works used for free with permission from the artists (and there are a lot of free-use works out there!) or if artists are paid when their works are used to train AI. The latter seems pretty unlikely.

i don’t get the whole rap battle between Kendrick & drake because, obviously kendrick’s the better one here but he apparently knew all this shit about drake being a pedophille and groomer the WHOLE TIME and then only spoke up in order to win a fight, and kendrick had Kodak Black on his last album, who was charged and plead guilty for sexual battery in 2016 for raping a teenage girl and also got in hot water for child neglect. same kinda shit as drake. idk, no matter how good his bars are and how good he pretends he is, kendrick still just seems like a typical man who protects and supports predators when they’re his friends and calls women bitches while he’s at it

i really cant argue against that, but i believe he wasn't added to the album as an endorsement of what he did. Mr. Morale is an album about personal growth, and about Kendrick himself. Kodak said himself that him and kendrick are very similar in a lot of small ways.

while kendrick's never said why kodak was added to the album, many believe it's the contrast of despite the fact they're similar, kodak has a history of violence and has went to jail many times, highlighting how even though kendrick is successful, others like him are still struggling with systemic racism and the cycle of violence and crime pushed by that same system.

The line as well "like it when they pro black, but I’m more Kodak Black" is literally telling the viewers he's not a Savior or a Mr. Morale, he's closer to a Big Stepper who makes awful mistakes

i can't say it was a good idea to include a rapist on an album, that does deserve criticism. but i believe it wasn't him supporting rapists, it more read as "there's growth and change both individuals and the entire system needs to do"

as for the "people have known about drake being a groomer the whole time" yeah. people have. he's gotten away with it until now. and it's a good thing that a well respected and incredibly famous person is bringing light to it.

kendrick had fuck all to do with drake since poetic justice so he didnt say shit about him. a lot of the industry kinda hated drake the whole time, and have been speaking out against him. kendrick's just the second (shout out megan thee stallion) to make it into a popular catchy song, which is a good thing as well because it gets more people talking about it!!!

Drake was the one who made Push Ups and Taylor Made and constantly went online to told him to make a response track. like the feud would have been over at Like That but it was Drake constantly provoking him to make content. Straight up doing things that kendrick said "hey if you do this i'm going to retaliate" and then drake did it, and kendrick retaliated exactly like he said he was. This whole thing is Drake's fault, he's the one constantly pushing it.

I can't say kendrick isnt also pushing it now, but everything's pointing to he's just making more songs to bring more people to talk about it. There's no ads on the videos. He's not copyright claiming anything. He's making serious songs to highlight issues and catchy songs to spread this info far. it's a genius use of the medium to bring light to the issues drake brings.

i have seen alot about it on twitter but very littel here so im gonna mention it jsut because it makes me sad/angry how quickly people are okay with studios doing shitty things if they find a game funny enough- (take it with a grain of salt since i havent been able to do research on it on my own)

so recently a new game released called 'palworld', its a blatant pokémon rip off (or a weird mix of that with some shooter game idk) but with guns hooray, and i am not here to defend the giant that is pokémon (im well aware their games arent exactly the greatest lately) but plagiarism is plagiarism and not only does it steal from pokémon itself but also stole fakemon designs made by fans (the examples i saw were literally 1 to 1)

as other people have been finding out the owner of the studio is also really into AI, so its not out the question that its been used in there, and is also of the opinion that anything they see can just be taken, be it idea or design; the studio itself seems to be build around copying whatever is popular (the examples i saw were well .. pokémon, breath of the wild and hollow knight) kinda like those shitty copies of popular movies meant to trick parents into buying the wrong one

just now i also learned that apparently you can sell people into slavery in the game (people, not "just" the "pals"), cool.

its already made a big impact, half the streamers i follow are playing it to thousands of people and i heard it made millions in profit already, which, given how the whole hogwarts legacy bs went down, maybe shouldnt surprise me, but at a time of artist struggeling against being stolen from and shitty game studios releasing shitty games, betting on or already replacing artists with AI and still make billions, AND in dark times in general i find it especially disheartening

people are proudly yelling about not caring about anything off about the game or the studio bc they either find the premise funny enough or just hate pokémon so strongly they laugh and dance about the stealing, actively cheering it on and more

i guess i shouldnt be surprised by anything anymore after seeing people actively cheering on a genocide but here we are. (do not try to argue with me, i know what "inspiration" is, i know what "you cant copyright an idea" means, it either doesnt apply here or isnt the point, fuck off.)

oh! sure, no problem buddy.

you first have to understand im am a bit of a radical when it comes to "ownership" of art. personally i am of the opinion that all art should be free to share with the world. i dont like the idea of artists hoarding ideas or concepts or gatekeeping their work. i think its pretty miserly to claim ownership of a thought, of an idea, of a concept. it reduces and constricts other peoples capacity for expression.

i think its fair if you want to monetize your work but even that i feel should have a time limit, as in, after a few years your art should be free. otherwise you are just rent seeking.

moreover i think other people should be free to take, transform, remix, reshuffle, cover and alter and build upon the art of others. i think there is something beautiful there in human interaction, in comunication, in the evolution of an idea into new shapes and combinations.

ovbiously copyright tends to put obstacles to these things, but it leaves some space for it in the form of fair use. that if your work is commenting or critiquing or transforming the work of someone else then its fair game. i think that is peachy.

now, so far i think a lot of people would agree with me and the place where we split is wether a human is doing these transformations or a computer program, they argue the fact that a computer is doing it makes it illegitimate, it makes it so that its not an action of human agency, it is not an expression of human thought or creativity and thus it cant be true critique or transformation.

now there are two angles we can tackle this. we can argue wether it matter if a human does it or a computer does it, or we can argue wether we can actually say that humans had no bearing on the process. i will focus on the second one.

given that the AI is a product of human endeavor, made by humans, trained by humans on human work to conform to human precerences and then it is activated and (depending on how involved the process is) guided and regulated by human prompting and human curation. i think there is enough human agency and discernement on every step of the process to say that the result is one of human creativity. that the AI is merely a tool being used by humans to make things.

now i have made references to transformative works and that brings to mind things like collages and remixes and reshuffles and mashups, which may lead to the wrong impression that the AI works by grabbing a thousand pieces of work that it has stored in some huge database and then it picks and collates it all together. that is not how it works at all, i could go on a huge tangent on how the AI actually does what it does but rest assured it does not copy and paste portions of art stored somewhere inside it.

finally i want to conclude on the idea of wether its theft to use the art people put online to train an AI. like i already explained it clearly does not violate copyright since any sane interpretation of the process has to be transformative enough to count as fair use. but on a more fundamental level, is it right to "use" other people's art without their consent for whatever purpose, regardless of wether you are breaking copyright or not?

i think yes.

now let me be clear, if you are putting your work behind a paywall, like in your patreon or whatever, where the only way to access it is by paying the artist. then i think it can meaningfully be said that to access that art without paying the artist is theft. its piracy after all. and as we all know piracy is wrong (wink wink nudge nudge).

but now that is not the case with most art online, right? most art online is completly free to view and download. in fact the only way to view it is by downloading it, the browser has to store the image in the cache memory of your pc in order to show it through your monitor. so to download the copy and keep it in your disk has to be fine, it is not a scarce resource, its a digital image, it can be copied infinity times without ever depriving the creator of the image itself, and its free! so the artist is not being deprived of some revenue that should have been rightfully theirs.

now lets say i want to count how many pixels in that image are green, so i take pen and paper and start counting. surely that has to be right.

how about if i do that with every image in their gallery. that has to be fine as well. what if i count how often every color appears on every pixel on every image, so that i have this giant database with a statistical distribution of color across all the works of the artist, and in order to do the whole thing faster i have a machine do that for me? does an artist have the right to say i cant do this? could a painter forbid an art historian from analizing their artistic evolution because it would be "using their art in a way they didnt consent"? could a sculptor stop someone from measuring how tall their statues tend to be? can miyazaki come and say that he is forbidding me from using his movies as animation reference because that is not how he wants people to interact with his art? i mean maybe. maybe society decides that yes, that is a right artists should have. but personally i think that would be a bad thing because it would constrain the capacity of humans to learn, to study and to express themselves and that is anathema to my principles.

on a more fundamental level, i, as an artist who has made art and who understands how the sausage gets made, dont hold ART or the creation of ART as some kind of sacred cow. i dont think there is this contamination or desecration because we use a machine to do it. i do think there is virtue in doing art on your own with your own hands. its certainly impressive, it takes time and effort and talent and skill and all of that are things that i personally find valuable. much like running a marathon or doing your dishes. but there is no shame in driving a car or using a washing machine either, sometimes we want things to be easier and convenient and that is perfectly fine and valid.

then there is a whole other argument about AI outcompeeting artists in the marketplace and driving them out of their jobs, much like many other industries in the past were automated by the progress of technology leaving people without jobs. i can sympathize a lot more with this argument but this post has gotten too long already so ill leave it at that

i have considered making it a podcast feed yes!! that was actually one of the first ideas i had for the series and i really would love to try it out! my only concern about doing so is the fact that i'm not certain about the legality of featuring uncut copyrighted gameplay in a podcast feed like that? especially if it's like, THE primary focus of the episode like with Pikmin. wanna make sure if I did so that it would be above board. if nothing else i could see about creating an RSS feed version of the show even if it's not distributed to a platform like spotify! that way you could just add the feed to a podcast app. will definitely consider that option for the full series!

A bit ago I made my own rewrite of Millie as a challenge and ended up loving her so much I put her into my own project (adjusted so there's no copyright infringement and she fits \w world-building)

I seriously think Viv doesn't want to put any effort into characterizing Millie. Like I don't think she's bad at it, I just think she doesn't want to.

Even outside of a text in a doc form of characterizing, there are ways in visual media to add depth to your character. Random scene to explain my thoughts, I.m.p. Having a meeting to plan things before a murder: Wanna characterize Millie as an overzealous maniac? Have her rocking back and forth in her chair, pumped up, ready to go the exact second they finish up. Wanna make her sweet and caring to contrast her fucked up job? Make her take notes, nod along, and when they head out have her check up with everyone. Is she better at her job than the others and knows it? Have her pay attention during the planning parts but more distance during unimportant pieces, weapons laid out on the table to pick the very best one for the job. JUST SOMETHING PUT SOMETHING THERE, PLEASE!!!

The way other characters are around her doesn't help.

Moxxie could be the one thing holding her back from trying to clear out every ring and so he intervenes anytime shes slightly annoyed, blitz could see her as a rival for murder or a scapegoat for everything, Sallie Mae could be by her side the entire time she's on screen, striker could respect her for her strength and loyalty but hate her for the fact she's a suck up to royalty or too energetic or because she's a wild card, Loona could have her as the only person she shares a hobby with and being a slightly protective cus of it, her parents could be overly doting and ask if she's been taking care of herself and acting less self-sacrificial, Chaz could avoid her the entire episode out of fear and then have his fear be justified during the wedding! These are the ideas I thought up in 20 minutes, and you don't have to change much for the antagonists or her family!

Like even her design shows literally nothing! Jack. Shit.

Wacky hairstyle, scars, more than 2 colors, any thought put into the outfit at all, accessories, Body type (to an extent), posing, anything!!! That's all I'm gonna say about design cus I could go all day with the hypotheticals because there's SO FUCKING LITTLE TO HER I CANT EVEN RUN WITH WHAT'S THERE!!! I have to make up things about her just to demonstrate how little Viv has tried with even the most BASIC characterization. There's nothing to Millie, not even poorly written things, just actually nothing!!! I've seen characters who can be summarized with a handful of words, don't have a single line of dialogue, and have a backstory that's a sentence long be characterized better than her!!!

It's actually a bit impressive how little Viv has tried! It's like she's actively avoided giving her even the slightest base-level character!

i've been feeling bad lately abt tagging my art and fic as rwby because lets all be real here. me and canon have been divorced for a few years at this point. and as fun as it is to run around with my interpretations of these characters as i have been doing since like 2018 i do feel like im at a point where its like. Why Am I Even Tagging It. its basically not even. rwby any more. lol.

Tbh i cant think of any framework for defining ai models as theft that could not also be applied to piracy. And i find the idea of 'uncompensated labor' to be....a stretch given you the artist still own the product of your labor - your art, and are able to sell it or otherwise profit from it. In situations where your employer held the rights to any work you created under them then it may become applicable, but that seems to take a backseat in convos compared to examples where the artist owns their own work and any profits made from it.

Which is not to say i dont think ai models developed using free data being put behind paywalls is okay. I do think its a dick move, comparable to private pharma companies using public funding and resources to develop vaccines the public must pay to access.

But this whole ongoing saga for me raises a lot of questions on how we apply the idea of 'theft', and more importantly why is it not enough for something to be seen as simply disrespectful without falling back on capitalist laws regarding property ownership.

Plagarism is a more relavant term imo for describing a lot of the grey areas regarding using ai tools to imitate a specific artists' work and so on. Though i get the sense much of the debate is coming from the perspective of business rather than art in that artistic debates on what constitutes plagarism are ongoing and not as easily defined in clear rules.

Which is why i always come back to thinking that you can think someone's behaviour is dishonest or disrespectful without pushing for it to be punishable under law.

A lot of these arguments rooted in copyright and so on also just dont feel applicable to me as someone working in a traditional medium and who doesnt make money via merchandise of my art but by sales of one-off works.

In some ways i do think i am at an advantage over digital artists but thats more i guess about how digital art lags behind traditional in terms of offline resources and spaces (galleries guilds etc etc).

But also i feel there is a hesitancy to admit that the nature of self-employment is precarious and the concerns outlined wrt ai are not new concerns, just the old ones with a new hat.

Guaranteed wage seems a lot more appealing to me than having to do the whole small business grindset thing. I dont want a world where i can weaponise copyright to protect my profits, i want a world where it doesnt matter if my art is profitable or not. Arguing for the former does not bring us closer to the latter, it just furthers the positioning of artists as business owners.

okay so it takes a lot of energy out of me to play this game. usually i can sit my white ass down and crank out some solid gameplay for 8 hours straight if you dont stop me, ive got high gaming stamina. i remember (very little of) the time i played Dead Cells for 40 hours straight. i can play DE for like.. an hour and a half tops

i dont really know why! i can play emotionally involved games, i can play text-heavy games, and i can play management games without breaking a sweat. theres just something about this game that drains me

again, i love this game. the setting and the presentation and the dialog and the characters and the mystery and the politics its all perfect, no notes.

okay so. i wake up. the sweet old lady is really into cryptids, and also casually racist. then i talked to the hardie boys, who all expressed their hatred in me in unique ways, which i deserve because im a cop. then one of them kill me. reload save

then i talk to fucking measurehead. hes the "racial realist" that speaks in all caps and kept telling me to bring my army to war so he can make my "ham sandwich race" extinct, offhandedly mentioning the importance of The Pale

i think i just get overwhelmed. theres so many stats and checks that i need to keep track of that i feel my eyes start to get heavy. again, i cannot stress enough that this is not a complaint i have against the game, this is just be recounting my experience with it

for my stats, i tried to have a more speech-focused build early on, and that was a baaaaaaad idea. i spread myself out too evenly and didnt have a crutch stat so i was just kinda mid at everything, especially since i didnt wanna rely on substances. this is a roleplaying game and MY raphael ambrosius costeau is using his erotic self-asphyxiation induced traumatic brain injury as a fresh start!

i uh. probably shouldve said this earlier but i feel its important to stress that im not making any of this up. these are all real things that happen and exist in this game

Aight imma reply to this because I believe you’re asking in good faith.

The fact that you already hold doubt for this tool in terms of ethics, economy, and copyright should let everyone know that, even if generative ai helps artists streamline their process, it is a flawed tool.

tl;dr: Generative ai is a deeply flawed tool that, comes with an abundance of prerequisites, does not easily integrate into the process, and serves as a massive injustice to yourself as a growing and learning artist. It treats time as an issue instead of a resource.

Let’s take into account what generative AI needs to function. It requires space for server rooms, which costs money. It requires servers to store data, which costs money. It requires maintenance like consistent cooling, which costs money and water. It requires hundreds if not thousands of people to review data entered into these servers, which costs money (and if thats not happening, that presents a very worrying flaw in the system)

Thats just what I can think of off the top of my head that generative ai needs before it can even be used. That is a massive blackhole for funds just to generate oddly unsettling images and videos. Yes it’s more convenient to the end user, but greatly unsustainable from a company’s point of view (which is why they push so hard at the narrative that EVERYONE should be using it.)

Say that I use generative ai to produce concept images to a client. My client will be like “oh i like this, but I would like you to change X, X, and X.” The thing about generated ai images is that it’s a flat file. They cant be edited. If you want to add those edits to please your client, you either generate new images while hoping those edits miraculously work out the way you want to (without adding other issues) Or you break out your hyperrealistic rendering skills for the thumbnailing part of the creative process… which is unnecessary work.

On the other hand, say a client has an idea but has no way to visualize it in a way thats satisfying to them. I can take 20 minutes out of my day for a handful of thumbnail sketches and then an extra 20 minutes integrating their requests.

If you use generative ai to create concepts for yourself as an artist… i mean theres no harm in that, but you’re doing yourself a massive injustice.

When you write essays in schools, it’s not (supposed) to be about the word count, it’s about exercising your brain to be able to present the opinions that you have in a concise and meaningful manner. There are stories of kids in school using ChatGPT for essays. It always makes me wince for the day they inevitably end up in a position to defend their ideas and don’t know where to start to formulate a response. I didn’t enjoy writing essays in school, but here I am now, writing an equivalent of one because I built those skills.

It’s not like using keyframe interpolation to keep you from having to do digital animation frame by frame, it’s taking away a key part of your self reliance as an artist.

It also doesn’t solve anything. There is no issue that exists in an artistic process that generative ai solves- unless you count time as an issue instead of a resource. Most artists don’t want generative ai because they have no use for it. It doesn’t work like IK rigging in 3D, where this tool helps you move limbs in a more realistic manner much more easily. Most tools help generate more time because thats what helps artists do more.

Time as a resource allows you to enhance the quality of your work. Let’s take a comic artist for example. Time allows a comic artist the ability to plan out page compositions, backgrounds, symbolism, dialogue, plot, character consistency in both design and personality, effects, rendering, etc. When theres less time to work with that means the comic artist unfortunately can’t flush out each page as much as they would like, possibly due to deadlines or other pressures. Time as an issue changes the script where artists are punished for not working faster. The quality of the end product is not considered, but instead, only that it exists. This leads to the soulless creation of things like Disney’s Wish (which was a nightmare behind the scenes) where creation is obligatory and not something made out of passion.

I got a little off topic on that last part but im keeping it in, because I feel like the constant pressure to Create Content goes hand in hand with generative ai

If time is the issue generative ai solves, then that generated image has nothing that makes it worth working with.

one thing that irks me about tech bros is that they fundamentally misunderstand how artists seek out tools to help their process

the thing about creating innovations and tools is figuring out how to streamline an annoying part of the process so you can get to the fun part of the process.

If I don't have to worry about drawing every strand of hair on a cat, that makes it easier for me to draw a cat: and so people in the community have made so so so many hair texture brushes with all these different and shapes to help me create that cat

in motion graphics animation, it'd be a massive time sink to manipulate a model Frame By Frame without keyframe interpolation. Keyframe interpolation is where you tell the computer to move an object from point A to C and the computer fills in what point B is. Its a feature and a tool that reduces the workload of a project and allows you to focus on what you really want to do instead!

which is why anytime I read and hear about a tech bro going off about the wOndERs oF Ai I wonder if they actually have any knowledge of the field they're trying to solve problems for, or if they're just moonlighting as Explorers of the New World granting Savages new technologies that they're too dumb to understand

So apparently McLaren didnt post anything about Dans interview because:

1. Supposed copyright laws thats never stopped anyone from posting something similar ever, somehows applies to this interview. They couldnt simply quote tweet one of the Daily Shows own tweets about it for some reason. 

2. Their twitter person apparently doesn’t have access to the other social media members, which somehow means they couldn’t post this. (I honestly have no idea why this means they cant do their jobs, cause if true why are they employed, it also never stops them posting anything else) And also how in this day and age do you not have access to other people, espeically whn youre job is sm.
